Landscaping - A Quick Takeoff How To

Landscaping takeoffs are fast and efficient with PlanHub's takeoff tools. This guide walks you through counting plant types and measuring an area for sod.

Set the scale for your plan. Once that's set, you can jump into measuring.

To learn how to set a scale, visit this article: How to Set the Scale in PlanHub Takeoff

Count Measurement

Step 1: Identify the plant types you need to count. In this example, we have three: Yucca, Sage, and Hawthorne.

Step 2: Click the Count tool in the toolbar.

Step 3: Name your count measurement —for example, "yucca"

  • Pick a color that’s easy to see, such as red.

  • Open the Symbols menu and select a symbol shape, like a star.

  • Increase its size for visibility on your plan.

  • Click Set to apply.

Step 4: Move your cursor over each Item you wish to count (example: yucca plant) on the plan and click to stamp it with your selected symbol.

Turn off the tool using the toggle "Continue" switch for the measurement in the measurements panel on the right.

Step 5: Set up a new count for the next item you want to count (example: sage).

  • Click Count in the toolbar at the bottom

  • Name it (e.g., "sage"), choose a symbol, adjust color and size, and click Set.

  • Click on each item you are counting(example: sage) plants using your new symbol.

  • The count result appears in the Measurements panel on the right.

Step 6: Repeat for each plant item you wish to count.

Area > Multipoint

Now measure square footage for areas that you are installing things like grass, mulch, gravel, or pavers. In this example, buffalo grass areas.

Step 1: Select the Area tool in your toolbar at the bottom, in the operation options select Multipoint mode, ideal for irregular shapes.

Step 2: Name the area measurement, make any adjustments to the appearance, and click Set.

Step 3: Begin mapping the areas where you are installing the product (grass). Do this by clicking on each corner of an area, which will outline the area. For arches or curves, move along the perimeter slowly and make your clicks closer together while holding the space bar to create a smooth curve and disable the snap-to-angle feature.

  • Left-click on a corner to begin measuring.

  • Left-click at each corner to change direction/create a corner (outlining the area).

  • Double left-click to end the measurement.

Step 4: The area is measured, and you can see the value in the Measurements panel on the right.

  • If you have more areas to measure, continue by clicking the Continue switch in your measurement panel on the left. This lets you move right into the next space and add to the measurement (achieve one total) for all the measured areas.

Step 5: Continue Measurement

  • Pan the view if needed (right-click and drag), then click the Continue switch to stay in measuring mode.

  • Start the next area measurement at a new corner. Repeat the previous steps for corners and arcs using small clicks and the space bar.

  • Double-click the last point to finish. The total area appears in the Measurements panel.

By following these steps, you can quickly tally plants and measure areas for landscaping projects in PlanHub. This process saves time and ensures precise estimates every time.
